Picture this. The gym has long since closed. Everyone in search of their new year new me body has gone home for the night. The weights are all nicely sitting on their racks, and the white towels lay neatly folded on the reception desk waiting to be thrown around the gym tomorrow morning. Walking around with a rag, and a spray bottle in his right hand, is new California Wrestling signing Jordan Ayers. To make a few extra dollars he stays late at the gym every night cleaning up, but mostly this affords him the chance to get his own workout in without having to split sets with Hans, or his brother Frans. As the young athlete makes his way around the gym he can’t help but stare at the oversized posters hanging from the crossbeams. Each one of them represents a different success story which has traveled through these walls. Jordan takes a few seconds looking over each one of them before turning his attention to the cameras.
Jordan Ayers: “Success stories are hard to come by. Especially in the world of professional wrestling. Seemingly every single day a new face pops up, and each one of them has the same goal. Become something. Something new. Something better. Something you’ve never seen before. “
“Generally within a few days these names are forgotten, and the names well… you’re lucky if they ever get noticed. I don’t plan on sitting here tonight feeding you the same story you’ve heard time, and time again. The name Jordan Ayers doesn’t command respect. Well, yet, at least. Frankly, I’m quite surprised most of you haven’t flipped the channel yet.”
“I’m not going to sit here and give you all the details of what to expect from Jordan Ayers. For starters that’s boring, and cliché. I’m going to allow you time to formulate your own ideas as to who Jordan Ayers is. Tonight I’m here to dish on my opponents this weekend at STARPOWER.”
Having walked through the gym, and double checking all of his nightly tasks the Hollywood Heritage hopeful sets his cleaning supplies down on the glass counter. Placing both of his hands on the counter Jordan hoists himself up and into a seated position. With his hands resting on his lap Jordan takes a few seconds looking down at the floor before returning his gaze to the cameras in front of him.
Jordan Ayers: “Eleni Karativis – The Beautiful Disaster. She fits the mold of a professional wrestler in today’s world. She checks all of the boxes. The size. The look. The attitude. But I have to wonder how each one of those is going to fare in a match against 5 other wrestlers. Some of them looking to return to their glory days, and some of them looking to create a brand new name in the industry. Everything someone thinks they know about the wrestling business goes out the window with a six pack challenge. It’s not as much about winning, as it is survival Eleni. In a few hours you won’t have to worry about someone blocking the sun, Eleni. You’re going to need to worry about someone blocking your future. Which one is more important to you?”
“Step Two. Equinox. I’ve spent some time reading up about you, Equinox. Learning exactly what makes you tick. There’s quite a storied history there. The list of where you haven’t performed is probably a lot shorter than where you have performed. Having been around the block a time or two I’m sure you have an advantage heading into this match. You probably know exactly what it takes to be successful in a match of this nature. I wouldn’t even be surprised if you’ve participated in something similar a time or two. I can’t sit here and say you’re public enemy number one to me in this match. Getting too focused on one competitor is exactly how someone takes themselves out of the match before it even begins. However, I will be keeping an eye out for you. I will be sure to watch every move you make. Knowing your game is the advantage I hold over your head. Proactive. Not reactive.”
The nerves were making it difficult for Jordan to sit still. Knowing his professional debut was right around the corner Jordan was experiencing fear, excitement, confidence, and doubt all at the same time.
Jordan Ayers: “Gemma Woods. The pedigree is there. Coming from a wrestling family has set you up to know exactly what this business has to offer. I’m sure you’ve seen it, and even lived through it all being a third generation superstar. The perfect mixture of old school, and new school flair to be a solid competitor in the game. Much like me I’m sure you grew up with your heart ‘all in’ with the business. I look forward to testing my skill against someone like you. This is the perfect opportunity to not only find out if I belong in today’s wrestling landscape or if this is all just another pipe dream. As the minutes tick off the clock bringing STARPOWER closer I welcome the challenge or a purebred.”
“Olivia Areano. I’m not sure there’s another wrestler in this match with a better chance at winning the whole thing than you. It’s obvious that the California Wrestling faithful see a lot in you. Having you listed above a champion in their most recent top 10 rankings. That alone tells me a lot of what to expect when the bell rings. I doubt you’re ready, or even willing, to give up on that placement. And something tells me it’s a position that you don’t take lightly. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I’m going to leapfrog you in the rankings during my first match. But this will at least be a way for me to test my skills against one of the best in the company. I plan on doing everything in my power to see what that #5 power ranking is all about. Is it deserved? Or was it an abnormally good showing for you last time out?”
“Finally, we have another member of the top 10 list in Seth Lawless. There’s a lot to learn about Seth Lawless at STARPOWER. Is the fame justified? Or was he just lucky to be aligned with the right crew at the right time? The fans are looking for the answer, Seth. So am I. Part of me even wonders if you don’t have some of those same questions running through your mind. You may have had the time on the shelf to attempt to wash those names off of your record. But I have to wonder was that the smartest idea? I admire your determination to get back on the positive side of the business. It just appears to me that you may have bitten off a little bit more than you can chew. Having wrestled just a few days ago, and now you need to step into the ring with five other competitors hopefully having made it back to 100% in the meantime. Seth, I may just be a wrestling nerd right now, but in a few hours I plan on becoming a wrestling superstar.”
Hopping down from the glass counter Jordan takes a long deep breath. Hoping to clear the anxiety coursing through his veins. With his thoughts slowly regaining focus Jordan takes another look deep into the cameras in front of him speaking directly to the fans who are still tuned in to the unknown man standing before them.
Jordan Ayers: “In a few short hours I will begin writing my own success story. Right now the pages are blank. Walk with me as we write these pages. Teach me. Learn from me. My debut, my career, it’s proof that you can do anything. If you’re going to do something, work at it. Together we will work our way to the top. Together, we will earn that staying power. Together we can accomplish it all. STARPOWER is Chapter One. Let's make it a good one.”
With those words Jordan pushed his way through the double doors, and out into the warm California night.
