We open at Woods Wrestling, the gym owned and operated by Gemma's father, Walter Woods. Walter stands in the middle of an otherwise empty ring. Surrounding the ring is a group of twenty some hopefuls, potential future stars of the wrestling business who are currently learning the craft from Walter himself.
WALTER WOODS:
"Today is one of the proudest days of my life. Before I give you the official announcement, I want to recall the time my only daughter was ten years old. She had been traveling the road with her mother and I since she was just over six months old. She was no stranger to the wrestling business. Well one day, when she was ten, she slid into this very ring and asked to take her first bump. I was caught off guard. I knew she loved wrestling, but she was my princess. My little girl. Surely she wasn't being serious, right?"
Walter rubs at the wrinkles near his temples as he chuckles quietly.
WALTER WOODS:
"Well, not only was she serious, but she took one of the best bumps I had ever seen. From that moment on, I knew that my little girl was destined to not only carry on the Woods name, but to carry it to heights that none of us have achieved. Fast forward twelve years and she's now twenty two. My daughter has been wrestling on the independent circuit since last June, but now things are changing. My daughter has officially signed with California Wrestling. You guys know her. You guys train with her nearly every week. Give it up for my baby girl, Gemma!"
'Breaking The Chains' begins playing over the loud speaker in the gym as Gemma Woods walks towards the ring. The men and women at ringside clap for her and a few of the trainees help her into the ring. Gemma immediately wraps her arms around her father before turning to look at the men and women in front of her. She takes a deep breath and looks down at the canvas.
GEMMA WOODS:
"I just want to say thank you to every single one of you in this gym today. From my dad, to every one else. I wouldn't be in the position I'm in now if it weren't for all of you."
Gemma pauses, taking in the moment as every eye in the gym is on her.
GEMMA WOODS:
"This is the moment I've worked for since I was ten years old. The opportunity to make my family proud, to be their little 'princess' on the big stage, it's mind blowing. I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a replacement for a match against Equinox in California Wrestling in a tournament challenging for the Hollywood Honors championship. I'm still waiting for someone to pinch me and wake me up. Is this real life?"
Gemma puts her hand on the top rope and grips it hard, the smile hasn't left her face since she stepped foot in the ring.
GEMMA WOODS:
"October 24th. That's the date that will mark my debut for California Wrestling. Working the indies has been fun, and I've learned so much, but the opportunity to jump right in and be able to compete for a championship? It's special. California Wrestling is special, and Equinox is a special opponent to debut against. I know it won't be easy, and I wouldn't want it to be. Walk of Fame is going to be epic, but remember what I said. I wouldn't be here without you guys and..."
She pauses and looks back at her father who is leaning against the turnbuckle. He nods and gives her a thumbs up.
GEMMA WOODS:
"I won't be in that ring next week without you either."
The trainees at ringside begin chattering amongst each other, speculating on what Gemma could mean before she puts her hand up.
GEMMA WOODS:
"My family went ahead and purchased ringside seats for each and every one of you for my debut, so, not only will you be able to see Kendrick Kross, Maki, Fempire, and all of your favorites up close and personal, but I will have you guys there to cheer me on against Equinox!"
The trainees all begin clapping at the announcement from Gemma, eventually quieting back down to let her continue.
GEMMA WOODS:
"I made it, and I know you guys can make it too. As much as this is about you guys being there to cheer me on, this is also your chance to take it in first hand and really see how it feels to be in and in front of a live crowd."
She turns to her father.
GEMMA WOODS:
"I don't really have much else to say, I'm honestly still a bit overwhelmed right now. Thank you daddy, for always believing in me. And I hope I make you proud next week."
Gemma hugs her father as the trainees all enter the ring. The two members of the Woods family meet the students in the middle of the ring and all embrace in a hug, celebrating what could be the start of something very special for Gemma and California Wrestling.
